When we were given the opportunity to oversee the area at Ravine Lake Park for the City of Huron in 2007 we noticed something missing and that was flowers. We received our motivation to enhance the area from the City of Arlington SD that has a island filled with flowers. I met with the lady that oversees their flowers and coordinates the volunteers and brought her ideas to Huron. Working together with Huron Park & Rec Dept, Dakota Provisions and United Way Day of Caring two flower beds were established on Izaak Walton Island in 2008. These beds will filled with perennials with the hope they would survive the cold winter winds the blew across the lake. They did. In 2010 with the same group metioned earlier three more flower beds were established. In addition to these beds, flower boxes were put on the 1930's bathhouse that is the home to Scoops and planters were put around the building. To maintain all of these flowers different groups from the community volunteered to help with the spring planting, summer watering and weeding. The area has become a place where the beauty of flowers is on display. In 2011 the Huron High School class of 1960, Dakota Provision, Prostrollo's Car Dealership and the Huron Park and Recreation Staff put a new gazebo on Izaak Walton Island. It is now the plan to work with the Huron Wellness Committee and develop a youth mentoring program where we can expand the beauty of flowers around Huron.
